If you live in the United States and you want to move North to Canada, you should be aware that you could have to pay one or (probably) more tariffs, taxes, or duties in order to do so. Some of these payments may be applicable upon registration while others may be required immediately upon entry.
At the border, you will have to declare your belongings, and the amount you might have to pay (if any at all) will depend upon the category of goods that you are brining with you. Each of these Clearit.ca categories get assigned one or more US or international duties, harmonized sales tax (HST), and/or goods and services (GST).
CATEGORY #1: The following could be subject to 20% duty and 5% HST/GST
CATEOGRY #2: The following could be subject to 18% duty and 5% HST/GST
CATEGORY #3: The following could be subject to 7% duty
CATEGORY #4: The following (mostly consumer electronics) could be subject to 8% duty and 5% HST/GST
This category also includes the following consumer items:
CATEGORY #5: Another large group, the following could be subject to just the 5% HST/GST
CATEGORY #6 classifies all PST exempt goods and has no duties or fees or taxes assigned to it.
CATEGORY #7: This category dictates that all books will have bear the standard 5% HST/GST
CATEGORY 8-12: The duties for these categories vary by province but contain the following item classifications:
